There are many steps a homeowner can take to help prevent termites from entering their home. Most importantly a homeowner should eliminate or reduce moisture in and around the home, which termites need to survive. Divert water away from your homes foundations by making sure there are no leaking down pipes, and hot water and air conditioning water runoff is diverted into drains. Reduce humidity and moisture in subfloors with proper ventilation. Trim hedges, plants, grass and remove mulch that is covering weep holes. Remove any tree stumps within 50m of the house.
Remove any timbers stacked against the house or stored in the subfloor. Also maintain a 75mm gap between soil and any wood portions of your home. Telltale signs of a termite infestation may include soft woods and darkening or blistering of wood structures such as skirting boards or window and door surrounds. Often mud tubes on the exterior of your home can also be seen.
